ADHD isn't a lack of attention. It's a problem steering it.
Barkley (1997)
ADHD - Foundations

The basics
People with ADHD can focus deeply. A video game, a deadline, or a new hobby can hold them for hours. The hard part is choosing what to focus on.

Digging in
The brain's control system is weaker. This system picks what matters, starts tasks, switches tasks, and stops impulses. Interest or urgency can override it.

So what
'Try harder' misses the point. The steering is broken, not the engine. Deadlines, structure, and real interest work better than willpower.

In ADHD, some brain regions mature later, not less.
Shaw et al. (2007)
ADHD - Foundations

The basics
Brain scans of hundreds of children showed that the brain's outer layer matured about three years later in ADHD. The biggest delay was in areas used for control and planning.

Digging in
Areas that handle the senses and movement developed on the usual schedule. Different parts grew at different speeds; the brain was not simply smaller.

So what
Delay explains a lot. Many people catch up unevenly into their twenties. Needing help at 12 does not mean needing it forever.

The youngest kids in a class are diagnosed with ADHD far more often.
Layton et al. (2018)
ADHD - Diagnosis

The basics
In US states with a September 1 cutoff, August-born children were about 34% more likely to be diagnosed than classmates born in September. Those classmates were nearly a year older.

Digging in
In states without that cutoff, the August-September gap vanished. The birthday itself was not the cause. Being the youngest in the room was.

So what
Some diagnoses are partly a comparison effect. Age-relative judgment is a real bias. It is worth naming before treatment starts.

Quick check
Why does the August birthday effect point to a diagnostic bias?
